The Book of Ashes

This project took a few months to complete and was originally inspired by a set of Youtube videos posted by Seth Apter entitled ‘tabbed booklet’. I eventually found that Book of Ashes described the feel of the book more aptly. The pictures show the open pages in certain permutations with the various flaps open, but there are other possibilities. You’ll have to forgive the clothes pegs (they were needed to keep the book open). One aspect that can’t be captured in picture form is the texture of the pages. I wanted this piece to be tactile and give the feel that some early years books have. There are too many techniques involved to give a blow by blow account of how I put it together. Suffice it to say, the piece is part mixed media collage and part art journal.
