Juxtaposition

A 3D piece that had its germination in the template for cardboard blocks. I cut these out with my Cricut machine and then laid down some pastel acrylic paint using a gel plate. I then proceeded to apply water-based Izink dyes, let them dry and printed grungy patterns using stamps and ink.
The construction of the cubes took quite a while as the glue had to dry without distorting the shapes. Then they had to be arranged in geometrical fashion on the backing board - which took far longer than I thought!
A word about the backing board. I meant to just paint a general abstract background, but it eventually turned into a satisfying piece in its own right. I considered leaving it be and making another one, but in the end decided to take the plunge and cover it up with the blocks. I still don’t know if this was the right decision, but at least I know what’s underneath there. I reproduce the original image here for history’s sake.

The dictionary definition of Juxtaposition is, ‘two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect’ - it seemed like an apt title.
