Faces in the Window

This is a Mixed Media on Canvas. Quite a large one (for me)- 20 x 20” This one made use of an old canvas I found in a charity shop. As is often the case, I laid down an initial collage foundation with the focal point being a window with additional green stencilled pattern superimposed. As I built up the layers, things took on a darker, ‘Barkeresque’ quality. Before long, the words of Dio’s song, ‘Faces in the Window’ came to mind and influenced the direction further:
Give me shelter shelter
I can face the day
Then I’ll just fade away
Give me shelter
Give me shelter
Sleep comes slowly
The fire starts to die
You open up your eyes
Faces in the window
Noises in the night
Faces in the window
Hiding from the light
Faces in the window
We are evil
And we are all divine
Creations of the mind
We are pleasure
I see clearly
Who’s behind the wall
Yes, I can see us all
I was pretty pleased with the result as it made use of different shades within the shapes, use of charcoal and a myriad of marks. It’s another of those paintings where you can look at it in different lights and at different times, and see different images on the canvas.
