Accidentally Failing on Purpose

I intentionally planned to produce three pieces that employed Khadi-type card and self-designed die cuts as an overlay. I initially thought of framing these as a triptych but settled on three separate pieces in the end that explore a theme in brown, red and blue. Part 2 also employs the use of a self-designed stencil, also cut out using the trusty old cricut machine.

The title? Simply a retort from an ‘Archer’ episode where the main character expresses one of his customary put-downs. I liked the combination of words, as they sum up the dilemma an abstract artist sometimes faces when they take the risk of confronting a blank canvas. One has to take the plunge and risk failing - an intentional act. Sometimes I do in fact ‘fail’, yet - more often than not - the accidents I produce take on a life of their own, especially when combining different elements.

Thanks to my FB friends for suggesting the final orientation of part 1. The glyph die cut suggests a weird combination of Egyptian and Greek influences to my mind.

What do these companion pieces evoke in your mind?
